Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu

The renowned Salkantay Trek, named among the best treks in the world, is a great alternative to the Inca Trail. The Salkantay Trek is a remote and ancient footpath in which you will have the opportunity to see beautiful sceneries, snowcapped mountains, varied flora and fauna. The Salkantay Trek presents a unique combination of culture and mysticism. The trek offers an amazing and extraordinary adventure in the highest peaks of Humantay mountain.

Itinerary for the Salkantay trek

Day 1: Humantay Lake (cold)

We leave from Cusco by bus very early towards Mollepata, passing various towns. Here we´ll have breakfast. We will continue by car for 1 more hour to Soraypampa to start our trek to Humantay Lake. After a couple of hours at the lake, we start hiking down to our Quiswarniyoc exclusive camp for 2 hours to have lunch. After lunch, you have free time to explore the beautiful area and if you like more hiking, you can go up to Mirador of Salkantay. From there, you have a panoramic view of the entire region.

Day 2: Highest peak (very cold)

We have breakfast very early and continue our hike to the highest peak at 4650 m, while passing the snow peaks Salkantay and Humantay. After this we start descending towards Chaullay, where we´ll spend the night.

Day 3: Santa Teresa (warm)

As is tradition during this trek, we have breakfast early in the morning. After that we start hiking through a jungle-ish valley, appreciating all kinds of plants, wild fruits, little waterfalls and rivers. After about 5 hours of hiking, we will arrive at La Playa Sahuayaco, from where we will take local transportation for one hour to Santa Teresa, which is the third campsite. After lunch, there is enough time to go to the beautiful hot springs of Santa Teresa, a great place for relaxing.

Day 4: Hidroelectrica (warm)

On the 4th day, we will visit Llactapata. This is the only Inca ruin that you will pass during your Salkantay trekking. From Llactapata you will have a beautiful view of Machu Picchu. After this, we will hike downhill to Hidroelectrica for about 2 hours to have a nutritious lunch and rest for a while. The last part is a hike to Aguas Calientes for 3 hours along the train track. Once you arrive in the small town, we take you to the hostel where you have time to rest and shower and then dinner with the group.

Day 5: Machu Picchu (warm)

We climb to Machu Picchu very early to see the spectacular sunrise. The trek will follow an ascending path crossing the high jungle. After passing the control entrance around 6:00am our group will have a private guided tour for 2 hours in the Inca citadel. Later passengers will be free to enjoy Machu Picchu on their own. In the afternoon, we will catch the train back from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo. In Ollantaytambo we will be picked up and transferred to Cusco.
