Medical Internship
Designed for students of medicine and related professions who have recently graduated or are in their final years of study and who are who are interested in learning and improving their abilities and knowledge in the field of health. During the internship students will be in direct contact with patients under the supervision of a local doctor. In addition they will receive bibliographical material that will allow them to acquire knowledge of the cases that they see.
The students will work at the Cusco Regional Hospital in different doctors' offices and the specialist wards of the hospital. This is a level 3 hospital that receives patients from the entire Cusco region. You will be working directly under the supervision of the hospital medical staff.
Duration: Our program of Medical Intership is normaly for 4 weeks but it can be extended to a maximun of 3 months.
Why take a medical Internship in Peru ?
According to feedback from our International students, Peru is one of the few countries in the world where students of medicine can be in such direct contact with patients. In contrast to the training systems of countries in North and South America and Europe, medical interns in Peru can aquire a greater breadth and depth of "hands-on" experience in a short time. As a result of social and environmental conditions in the Cusco region and the level of development in Peru as a whole, in Cusco you will see patients with diseases and conditions rarely seen in North America or Europe.
Medical Internship Systems that you can to choose:
System 1.- You can choose the specialty in which your you want to gain skills and new knowledge. In this system your entire internship will be spent in one specific area of Medicine, for example Pediatrics. In this case you will dedicate 4 weeks to your chosen area, observing and being involved in consultations, investigations and treatments under the supervision of a Peruvian doctor.
System 2.- You can choose to combine 4 medical specialties in which you are interested. You will rotate one week in each one of the specialties that you choose. Here you will have the opportunity to be involved in consultations, investigations and treatments under the supervision of a Peruvian doctor.
Specialties that you can choose:
- Obstetrics and Gynecology
- Pediatrics and Neonatology
- Surgery
- Gastroenterology
- Odontology
- Infectology
- Traumatology
Requirements
- Certified copy of your university academic record specifying the level of studies you have attained.
- 4 passport photos, that will be used in accreditation documents within the hospital.
- Passport.
Costs
For a program of 4 weeks.
a) Basic Program: Medical Intership
Includes:
- Practical sessions at the hospital in the doctor's offices and hospital wards.
- Bibliographical material.
- Your personal program Co-ordinator.
- Scrub.
- Homestay with a friendly Peruvian family.
- Official Certificate of attendance and activities undertaken.
* Intermediate Spanish knowledges is a requiremet.
b) Basic Program: Medical Intership plus Spanish lessons
Includes:
- Practical sessions at the hospital, in the doctor's offices and hospital wards.
- Bibliographical material.
- Your personal program Co-ordinator.
- Scrub.
- Homestay with a Peruvian family.
- Official Certificate of attendance and activities.
- Classes in Medical Spanish, with specific medical vocabulary 2 hours per day.
* This program does not require previous Spanish knowledge.
Enrollment Process
- You must fill in your application form on this web site a minimum 2 weeks before arriving in Cusco. You must complete the whole form, including the specialties in which you would like to rotate.
- In Cusco a person from our school will be waiting for you at the airport holding a sign with your name on it. They will accompany you to the family home where you will live during your stay in Cusco.
- The next day at the school you will be introduced to the school Director and your program coordinator who will explain the program and schedules and then you will begin practical sessions at the Cusco Regional Hospital. The school will also provide you with lots of advice and information to ensure that your stay in Cusco is enjoyable and productive.
- If you choose the Medical Internship Program plus Spanish lessons, you will have Medical Spanish lessons for 2 hours each day.
Payment method
You must pay the cost of the whole program in cash on the first day of the program in cusco and prior to commencing your course activities. There are many banks and ATM'S close to the school making it easy to withdraw cash or change travellers cheques.
